Colonel Jasper Murdock established the Norwich Inn in 1797 as a tavern and rest stop on the coach road north from Boston. That began the tradition of fine food and warm hospitality that has been practiced in the same location for over two centuries. In 1889, a devastating fire leveled the original Inn, its carriage house, and several neighboring buildings. The Inn was rebuilt in the following year as a handsome Victorian structure with a wraparound porch and central turret.
Since the turn of the century, around 1902, several owners have made their own architectural changes to reflect the tastes and trends of their time. The current owners have spent years painstakingly restoring the Inn to its earlier splendor as a Victorian landmark in the center of a lovely Vermont village.
There are 16 rooms, 7 in the adjacent motel, and efficiency suites in the Vestry. The rooms are decorated with traditional country furnishings with modern conveniences. Surrounding the Inn are gardens with seating for al fresco dining and relaxing. Since 1993, the Inn has featured its own hand-crafted ales in the Jasper Murdoch Tavern. The brewery is located in the old livery barn, making only a few hundred barrels of select ale each year. Jasper Murdoch's ales are available only at the Inn.
The Norwich Inn has a well-served reputation for its wonderful food in both their beautiful diningrooms and in the Tavern, and is prepared by their award-winning chef.
Front of the Inn, showing that wrap around porch where we spent loads of time just relaxing! | That porch again---the little white spot indicates me, sitting, relaxing, and waving at ya!! |
Here are the beautiful gardens at the side of the Inn. I wish I could have brought their gardener home with me! | This is another area for al fresco dining or just sitting to relax and chat. |
This is the general store directly next door to the Inn. This place has EVERYTHING! There motto is "If we don't have it, you don't need it!" | Here is a shot of Main Street and the store parking lot, taken from the Inn porch. This little village is ONE BUSY PLACE! |
